Privacy policy

English Reader is a small personal reading website. This page explains what it stores and why.
What we store
- Your Google account basics when you sign in: your name, email address and profile picture. We ask Google only for these (the “openid”, “email” and “profile” permissions) and never get access to your Gmail, Drive or anything else.
- Your vocabulary: words you save, the sentences they came from and the article they belong to.
- Your reading progress: which paragraph of an article you reached.
- Your settings: theme and translation language.
Visitors who do not sign in have no account; their reading progress stays in their own browser (local storage) and never reaches the server.
What we don’t do
- No advertising, no tracking pixels, no selling or sharing of data.
- Text you look up or translate is processed in your browser (dictionary files from this site, definitions from Wiktionary, translation by your browser’s built-in on-device translator).
Third parties your browser talks to
- Google, when you choose to sign in.
- Wiktionary (en.wiktionary.org) for English definitions, and Wikimedia Commons (upload.wikimedia.org) for recorded pronunciations, when you look up a word.
Your choices
On the Account page you can download everything stored about you, or delete your account. Deleting it removes your account, vocabulary, reading progress and settings permanently.
Backups
The site’s database is backed up every six hours to the site owner’s private Google Drive, and only the most recent backups (about three days) are kept. Backups contain no sign-in sessions or tokens. Data you delete disappears from the backups within about three days.
